Jolla’s long-term goal is to bring the full Sailfish OS experience to select Android devices as a way to boost the number of phones in its extremely niche ecosystem. Of course, before you run you must first learn to crawl, and that’s why Jolla announced earlier this year that it would first bring the Sailfish experience to Android via a special launcher.

The idea was that this would allow Android owners to get a Sailfish-like experience without actually having to ditch their favorite mobile OS to do it. And now they are finally starting to open up the experience, at least for those chosen as Alpha Testers.
In order to get your hands on the alpha version of the Jolla Launcher you’ll need to send an email to [email protected] from your Google account, you’ll also need to provide your name and the devices you plan to use with the launcher. Keep in mind that they are looking for folks with either a Nexus 4 or Nexus 5. After you submit your info you’ll receive a Google Play installation link starting next week, as well as other instructions. The only catch? You’ll need to agree to give feedback and report issues as you discover them.
Bottom-line, the alpha program is for those that find Sailfish interesting and don’t mind doing some testing work to get your hands on a sample of that experience. If you’d rather not go through any ropes, Jolla hopes to have the Jolla Launcher out to wider audiences in the months to come. For those that want the long-promised full Sailfish OS ROM for your Nexus device, you’ll likely be waiting quite a well, at least judging by the slow pace we’ve seen up until this point.
For more details on the launcher, you’ll want to head on over to the Jolla blog.
